Wanted: The Perfect Pet

“Wanted: The Perfect Pet” is a great children’s book by Fiona Roberton. Henry wanted a dog, the perfect pet more than anything in the world, so he put out an ad. A duck wanted a friend more than everything in the world, so when he saw Henry’s ad he  pretended to be a dog. Henry was so excited he had a dog, but then the ducks disguise got ruined and Henry saw he was a duck. The duck was so sad and so was Henry, but he made a list about all the things the duck was good at. I can make several connections to the book. The first connection I can make is text to self. I can connect this book to myself, because I really want a dog, and so did Henry. The second connection I can make is text to text. I can connect this book to the book to the book “A Dog’s Purpose” because the dog in that book is the perfect pet. The last connection I can make is text to world, because half the population have dogs. Overall this is a great book.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

“The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” is a children’s book written by William Kam kwamba and Bryan Mealer, and illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon.  The book is about a young boy who became the hero of his village when he created electricity from a windmill. Malawn started going to a nearby library when he was told he couldn’t go to school anymore, and found books on wind mills. He learned that windmills can generate electricity and more, so he decided to make one to save his village. Everyone called him crazy, but he knew he would succeed, and he did.

I can make several connections to this book. The first connection I can make is text to self. I can connect this book to myself because I did a science project on windmills. The next connection I can make is text to text. I can connect this book to the book “Wangari’s Trees of Peace- A True Story From Africa” because Wangari planted trees to help her village, just like how Malawn built a wind mill to help his. The last connection I can make is text to world. There are many wind mill farms in the world.

Overall this was a great book that can teach kids that you don’t have to be a certain age to make a difference.

After The Fall How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again

“After The Fall How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again” is a great children’s book by Dan Santat. The book is about Humpty Dumpty and his fear of heights after the fall, and how he gets back up again. I can make many connections to this book. The first connection is text to self. I can relate to Humpty Dumpty because I have a small fear of heights. The second connection I can make is text to text. I can relate this book to the lyrics of the song “Get Back Up Again” from the movie trolls. The song talks about how you are going to get back up again and again, which I think is the same message “After The Fall How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again” is giving us. The last connection I can make is text to world. Several people in the world have life changing accidents from things they love to do, and then they get scared to do it again, which is the same thing that happened to Humpty Dumpty. Overall I think this was a great book telling us how to not be afraid to do the the things we love.

The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art

“The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art” is an imaginative book written by Barb Rosenstock and illustrated by Mary Grandpre’. Vasya  Kandinsky was always a proper boy. But one day his aunt gave him a paint box and told him that proper boys always paint. But when he started to paint he heard music, like an orchestra playing. But when people saw his paintings they told him to paint houses and flowers. So he painted houses and flowers and became a lawyer. But one day he went to see an orchestra and could see colours as they played, he could hear music in colours, and see colours in music. So he became an artist in Germany painting sounds in his drawings creating Abstract Art.

I think the reason the book is called “The Noisy Paint Box” is because the colours he saw created noises for him making the paint box noisy. I can make several connections to this book. The first connection I can make is text to text. In the book “Fish in a Tree” a girl has a condition where she can see colours in music, and colours in words, which makes it difficult for her to read. This reminds me of this book because the Vasya probably had the same condition. The next connection I can make is text to world. There are several people in the world with the same condition Vasya had. They can see colours in music and music in colours. The last connection I can make is also to the world. There are a lot of artists now that make Abstrat Art, which is what Vasya created. As you can see I can make several connections to the book “The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art”.

There

“There” is a children’s book by Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick. The book is about a little girl who wonders what the future holds, and has determination to find out for herself. She thinks things like; When will I get there? How will I know?  She wonders when she will get there.

I can make several Connections to this book. The first connection I can make to this book is text to self. I think that this book is about wondering what the future will hold, and I know that I definitely do that. The next connection I can make is text to text. I can connect this book to the book  “The School for Good and Evil: The last Ever After.” I can connect the books because in the book “There” the little girl was wondering about her future, and in the book “The School for Good and Evil: The last Ever After” the main character Agatha wonders what will happen in her future very often. The last connection I can make is text to world. I can relate this book to the world, because I think a lot of kids wonder what the future will hold, and how their life would be like when their older.

Wangari’s Trees of Peace- A True Story from Africa

“Wangari’s Trees of Peace- A True Story from Africa” is a wonderful true story by Jeanette Winter about a girl named Wangari who stands up for growing trees in Africa. As a young girl growing up in Kenya, Wangari was surrounded by trees. Wangari earned a scholarship and left Kenya, but when her studies were over and she came back, she sees things have changed. There were no crops, trees, or birds. She learns that they cut down all the trees for building. So she plants 9 seedlings. Than she starts a nursery for growing the baby trees. Later she gives a seedling to each women in her village saying, “we are planting trees of hope.” So all the women in her village go and plant trees even though men are laughing at them. Soon word carries on and women in other villages are doing the same thing. Now there are some trees in Kenya. But when people come to cut down the trees for building she stands in there way. She is thrown in jail for it, but still stands tall saying right is right. And soon all of Kenya is green again. I made several connections to this book. My first connection is text to self. I can relate this book to myself, because I live in Vancouver where I am surrounded by trees like Wangari was in Kenya. The next connection I can make is text to text. This book reminds me of “The Breadwinner,” because the book is about a girl who lives in Afghanistan and helps her family by pretending to be a boy. I can connect the book “The Breadwinner” to Wangari’s story, because they both live somewhere where women to not have equal rights as men, and both do something about it. The last connection I made was text to world. I made this connection, because a lot of trees are being cut down for building in the world, and Wangari had the same situation in Africa. Overall I think it was a great book that teaches us one girl can make a difference.

The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau

” The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau” is a great book by Dan Yaccarino. The book is about Jacques Cousteau, the world’s ambassador of the oceans. From the first moment he got a glimpse of what lived under the ocean’s waves, Jacques was amazed. And so he set sail aboard the Calypso to see the sea. He and his team of scientists invented diving equipment and waterproof cameras. They made films and televisions shows and wrote books so they could share what they learned. The oceans were a vast unexplored world, and Cousteau became our guide. He was on a never ending quest to go deeper and deeper and learn even more. He even wanted to see if a person could live underwater, but found out that they could not. And when he discovered that pollution was taking over the seas, Jacques became our guide in how to protect the oceans as well. Jacques Cousteau loved the sea and shared his experiences with everyone. After reading this book I can make several connections to it. The first connection I made to this book was text to self. I can relate to exploring the ocean, because I have went snorkeling several times. The second connection I made was text to text. I can relate this book to my book called “All about Whales and Dolphins”, because the book is about whales and dolphins and there are whales and dolphins in the ocean, and Jacques probably did several documentary’s on them. The third connection I made was text to world. I can relate this book to the world, because there is a lot of pollution in the oceans, and Jacques was trying to stop pollution from getting into the ocean. The last connection I can make is text to media. I can connect this book to the media, because there a lot of programs trying to send awareness and stop pollution from destroying our oceans, and that was the same goal Jacques had. Overall I think this was a great book in memory of Jacques Cousteau, and I can make several connections to it.

Connections to Enemy Pie

“Enemy Pie” is a wonderful book written by Derek Munson and illustrated by Tara Calahan King. The book is about a boy who starts a enemy list after a new neighbor moves into the neighbor hood, Jeremy Ross. His dad tells the boy the only way to get rid of a enemy is enemy pie, but there’s a catch, he has to be nice to Jeremy for the whole day. The boy agrees, so he has fun with Jeremy all day, and by the end of the day realizes that he has lost his enemy. After hearing Enemy Pie, I can make a variety of connections. One connection I made was text to self. I can connect this book to myself because I’ve had an enemy before, but I was nice to them and we became friends. Another connection I made is text to text. In the book “The School for Good and Evil” the most popular girl in the village befriends the least popular girl in the village, by coming to her house with a basket of goodies everyday. This reminds me of how the boy offered Jeremy the pie. The next connection I made is text to world. This book reminds me of anti-bullying day, because it’s a day to stand up to bullying and make new friends. The last connection I made is text to media. There is a lot of mean comments on the media. But I think by being nice to someone on the media you can make a new friend. This reminds me of how the boy was nice to Jeremy and made a new friend. In conclusion I think “Enemy Pie” is a great book that teaches us how to make a friend out of a enemy.

Fish Who Could Wish

“Fish Who Could Wish” is a wonderful book with a great lesson written by John Bush, and illustrated by Korky Paul. The book is about a fish who lived in the deep blue see, but this was no ordinary fish. This fish could wish, and all his wishes came true.  He wished for a castle, a flashy sports car, and fancy new suits. He wished to fly and it all came true. He wished for a horse and Spanish guitar. He wished he could ski, and it snowed for a week. He even wished to be different shapes and sizes. And when the sharks came, he simply wished to be to small to eat. One day he wanted to teach the shark a lesson, so he wished he was the shark, and the shark was the fish. He wished for many different things, but not once did he wish to be wise. So one day he made the silliest wish he had ever made, he wished to be like all the other fish. However the other fish could not wish, so that was the last wish he ever made. The lesson of this book is be careful what you wish for. I think that we need to be careful what we wish for, because sometimes we think we really want something, but don’t realize what we already had until it’s gone. I think this was great book, with a very important lesson, and that everyone should read it.

Kindness #5

Today I helped my mom cook dinner. I helped out by getting the pasta sauce and stirring the pasta. I choose this act of kindness, because my mom was really tired and needed help with dinner. Also I really wanted to help her out, because she is consistently doing things for me. I think that my act of kindness made her feel very grateful, because she was really tired, and appreciated for all the hard work she does. It made me feel more appreciative for all the hard work she does, because helping with dinner took a lot of time. All in all I was really happy to help my mom cook dinner.
